How to get a phone number without a SIM card (VoIP)

Use an internet phone number for calls, texts and sign-ups when your phone has no SIM card.

If you keep your phone on Wi-Fi only, with no SIM card, you cannot make normal phone calls. You can still have a phone number using VoIP, which means calling over the internet.

Why you might want one

  • Some offices and banks insist on a phone number.
  • Some apps ask for a number when you register.
  • A VoIP number does not show where you are, because it is not tied to a mobile tower.

Two services people use

  1. jmp.chat. You can pay with Bitcoin. You use it with an app called Cheogram.
  2. MySudo. Only works in some countries, needs Google services, and can be paid for with gift cards.

How to set up jmp.chat

  1. Install the Cheogram app. See how to install apps.
  2. Create an account in the app by following the instructions on jmp.chat. If a step asks for an email address and you do not want to use your own, you can use a free receive-only address from your Juvega account (how to use free Juvega email addresses).
  3. Choose a phone number from the list, and pay for it.
  4. Use the Cheogram app to send texts and make calls from your new number.

Tips

  • Buy VoIP time with a payment method you are comfortable with. Bitcoin is the most private option on jmp.chat.
  • Keep Wi-Fi on only when you need it, and use a VPN.
  • Do not rely on a VoIP number for emergency calls. Always know how to reach emergency services another way.
