How to use Tor on your phone
What Tor is, why a phone is not the best place for it, and the safer way to use it.
Tor is a network that hides who you are online by passing your traffic through several computers around the world. It gives much stronger anonymity than a VPN.
The honest advice: use a computer
If you need real anonymity, use a computer running Tails or Qubes OS instead of a phone. These are built for it. A phone is harder to protect, so we do not suggest it for sensitive work.
If you still want Tor on a phone
- Orbot sends the traffic of the apps you choose through Tor.
- GrapheneOS says to avoid browsers built on the Gecko engine, such as Tor Browser for Android, on GrapheneOS.
- The Tor Project does not recommend using the Vanadium browser through Orbot.
Simple rules
- Do not log in to accounts that know your real name while using Tor.
- Do not install extra add-ons in the browser.
- Keep the app up to date.
- For anything serious, use a computer with Tails instead.
This guide is based on the public AnarSec guide "GrapheneOS for Anarchists" (anarsec.guide), rewritten in plain language. Their guide is written for people at high risk, so some advice is stricter than most people need. Use what fits your situation.
