How to use Stack Wallet to hold, send, receive and swap crypto
Create a wallet, back up your recovery phrase, and send, receive and swap coins with the open source Stack Wallet.
Stack Wallet is a free, open source wallet that supports several coins, including Bitcoin and Monero, in one app. You control the keys, which means nobody can recover your funds for you if you lose them.
Important: write down your recovery phrase on paper and keep it offline. Anyone who has it can take your coins. Never type it into a website, never store it in a photo, and never share it with "support".
Install it safely
- Download Stack Wallet only from stackwallet.com or its official GitHub page, or from a store the project links to. Be careful of copycat apps.
- If the project publishes a signature or checksum for the file, verify it before installing.
Create a wallet
- Open the app and choose Create new wallet.
- Choose a coin, for example Bitcoin, and give the wallet a name.
- The app shows a recovery phrase (a list of words). Write every word down in order, on paper.
- Confirm the phrase when asked, then finish.
- Set an app PIN or lock under the app's settings if it offers one.
Receive coins
- Open the wallet and tap Receive.
- Copy the address or show the QR code to the sender.
- Use a fresh address for each payment when the wallet offers one. Check that the first and last characters of the address match on both screens.
- Wait for network confirmations. The balance updates once the transaction is seen.
Send coins
- Open the wallet and tap Send.
- Paste or scan the recipient's address. Double-check it, because crypto payments cannot be reversed.
- Enter the amount and choose a network fee. A higher fee is normally confirmed faster.
- Review the summary and confirm.
- For your first payment, send a small test amount and check it arrives before sending more.
Swap one coin for another
- Open the Exchange section of the app and choose the coin you have and the coin you want.
- Enter the amount and review the rate, fees and the receiving address.
- Send the coins to the deposit address shown. The swap is carried out by a third-party exchange service, so only use amounts you are comfortable with and keep the swap ID.
- Wait for the new coins to arrive in your wallet.
Pay at the Juvega shop
When you check out with Bitcoin or another coin on the BTCPay page, scan the QR code with Send in your wallet, or copy the address and amount exactly. Pay the full amount before the timer runs out.
Stay safe
- Test restoring your wallet from the recovery phrase on a spare device when you have a small balance.
- Keep the app updated.
- Menus can change between versions, but the steps (create, back up, receive, send) stay the same.
