Why check a checksum?

A checksum is a file's fingerprint. If even one bit of a download changes, through a broken download or someone tampering with it, the checksum is completely different. Many projects publish the checksum next to their downloads, for example GrapheneOS, Tails and most crypto wallets.

How to use it

  1. Choose the downloaded file. Large files (several GB) are fine: they are read in pieces.
  2. Pick the method the website lists, usually SHA-256.
  3. Paste the checksum from the official website. The checker tells you if it matches.

Copy the checksum from the official website itself, not from the same place you downloaded the file. Even better, use the project's signature too.

Is it private?

Yes. Your file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
